If you were wondering if Christian children’s music, or worship, is important to God, wonder no more. Music, in some form (melody, hymn, song) is mentioned more that 1,150 times throughout the Bible! Music is constantly referred to as a very common form of worshiping God.

Psalm 150 says, “Praise the Lord with the sounding of the trumpet, Praise Him with the harp and lyre. Praise Him with tambourine and dancing, Praise Him with the string and flute. Praise Him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”

The Bible is filled with verses about the necessity of praising the Lord through music and dance. The entire book of Psalms is poems and songs written in worship to God. There should be no debate on whether or not our bodies were meant to honor God through music and song.

My favorite part of church has always been the music. Even when I was younger and we sang the old hymns I loved to sing! My parents and I often sang Christian children’s music together on long car trips, and I will never forget the first time I went to church and they had added the drums to the music, suddenly, it was loud and fun and we could rock out, just like we always had in youth group when we sang Christian children’s music.

Even now, I have my I-pod on and my knee cannot stop bouncing to the fabulous Christian tunes in my headphones.

Studies show that kids who are introduced to music and music education at a young age are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. They have higher basic math, science and language skills as well as higher SAT scores. Their self-esteem is stronger and they are less likely to be in gangs or abuse drugs and alcohol. Of course, this all depends on what type of music they are learning and listening to.

Obviously, Christian children’s music is going to include positive and hopeful lyrics that will introduce your child to the joys and hope that come with knowing the love of God.

Children’s Christian songs have words that are uplifting and affirming. The songs that a child learns are remembered for a life time. As parents, we are preparing our children for adulthood, not childhood. It is important that our children learn songs that we will want to resonate in their hearts for a lifetime.
